Some summertime musings.
I’m trying to recover from the truly epic Labor Day weekend I just had, so please excuse the fact that this post is really just a bullet-pointed list of things I observed recently about diabetes in the summer time. Here we go:
- Dexcom tape can trap more sand than you ever though imaginable. And it’s gross.
- Sometimes I hold my purse in front of the air conditioner of the car when it’s really hot inside so that the insulin bottle I keep in my bag doesn’t fry.
- Sometimes I wonder if the insulin in my pump is frying when I’m laying at the beach.
- I worry that a big wave will knock my Dexcom sensor or my pod off or both.
- Gu packs turn in to hot molten lava liquid when they’ve been in your beach bag all day, and they will of course be the ONLY thing you have with you when you get low after playing beach volleyball all day. You will gag as it goes down but then you will decide it kind of tastes like a hot chocolate. Kind of.
- Yesterday I walked by an entire family of people staring at my pump and sensor at the beach and was completely in earshot as they discussed (loudly) what the devices could possibly be. Is it a bandage?! It’s so big though! Oh she’s going in the water. Hmmm. I did not turn around to explain because the sand was too hot and also because I don’t care what they think it is. Also sometimes it’s funny to let people wonder.
- I have learned this summer that bar-b-ques don’t have to mean a ton of carbs. You can modify and live without hamburger buns.
- I’ve also learned this summer that I have a really wonderful fiance and group of friends and family that has never judged me for having diabetes, and never made me feel out of place with all my devices and diabetes jokes and they make summer in San Diego the very best time of the year.
