Ahahahahahahaha gross. I despise rice cakes.

Having only had Diabetes for two years (T1), starting at age 43, I feel bad for those who grew up with T1. I had a dang good run, filled with all the inappropriate food a 6’4″ 160lb guy with the metabolism of a hummingbird could cram in his mouth. The thing that I have discovered is that, very rarely, it’s okay to have a treat. That’s what the dial on my insulin pen is for! (P.S. latest A1C 6.3%)…and I’ll never eat a rice cake. Yuck.

Tim - I hear what you’re saying about being diagnosed later, but I also hear lots of people say they’re glad they got it young so they could grow up managing rather than already being an adult “set in their ways.” From your A1c, clearly you’ve got a handle on it, but do you think its harder for some adults because they don’t want to change, rather than kids who grow up with it?

I also hate rice cakes. Unless they’re covered in peanut butter. But then they’re not healthy anymore.

I think it’s harder for people to change if they haven’t had someone with diabetes in their life. My brother developed it at 12, when I was in the first grade. I’ve seen how it has impacted his life, so when I was diagnosed, I knew I had to take it seriously. That experience gives me an advantage that most diabetics don’t have. I just talked to another person with diabetes (T2) who says he “really isn’t changing” how he eats or drinks because every time he “eats right” he gets lows. My answer to that was, “take less insulin then!!” Some people are driven to take care of themselves and some are not. It has nothing to do with age, either. And you can’t MAKE someone care. I’m just glad that I’m someone who can see what’s waiting for me if I don’t work at it. No one needs to scold me.

Rice cake - is it REALLY a food or just a packing material?
