New OmniPod PDM is here!
Yay! The new PDM for my OmniPod arrived yesterday! Actually, I got a lot of new cool stuff including: a Camelback so I can stay hydrated during long runs/bike rides/beer pong tournaments. A kiddie pool which I am going to fill with ice and beverages this weekend to facilitate said beer pong tournament at my best friend’s birthday party. And, all of that was topped off with the arrival of my new Personal Diabetes Manager with a color screen.
I wish I had a better picture to show off how nice the new screen is, but just take my word for it, it’s a huge upgrade. My roommate said it made the old one look like the Zack Morris phone from Saved by the Bell. Its not actually that much smaller or lighter, but the square-ish shape makes me want to tuck it in my back pocket more than the old one – it feels so much like my Blackberry that I’m sure it wont be long before I try to send a text message on it. And the screen is so legit that when my dude picked it up to check it out, he actually touched the screen first and tried to scroll through it like the iPhone! There are some new nifty features too, including the reverse bolus and (my personal favorite), a test strip light so you can find where to put a blood sample even in a dark movie theater. Those of you that use Freestyle meters know how handy that feature is. All in all, this thing is super-awesome, and existing OmniPod users are able to snag one for only $150 – new users will likely pay the full retail price of $700 – still not bad compared to most traditional pumps that run around $6,000.
The best moment of getting my new PDM wasn’t actually when I got home and saw the box had arrived, it was earlier in the day when my friend at work received hers around 3pm yesterday. I wandered out of a meeting in someone’s office and scooted over to her desk, because she had emailed me saying that her PDM had arrived. What happened next was a delicious chunk of major diabetes dork-out. We oohed and ahhed over the color screen, compared the weight of the new and old one, and pretended shoot boluses at each other with our PDMs, all while two other coworkers looked on in confusion. So funny and fun to share a moment of excitement over new gadgetry with someone who “gets it.” J
