This stuff works. And by “stuff,” I mean exercise.
I love when something that we talk about as a good diabetes management tip actually works. The proof was in the proverbial sugar-free pudding for me yesterday. A delicious, but challenging meal of Venezuelan food (seriously, Portland has it all!) on Tuesday night left me with a not-so-fasting-apparently BG of 204 when I woke up at 5:30 on Wednesday. I bolused a half unit and then headed to a 6am workout class for an hour, and did not turn down my basals. The result an hour later had me feeling so much better, physically and emotionally.
I love the fact that a tiny bit of insulin can be forced to work harder when I work out, and make a BIG difference in my overall day. Nothing’s worse than heading in to a hard work day with a high BG and the feeling like you already messed up your day.
And because I know that exercise always makes me feel better, and because my new job has meant a lot of sitting in the car these days, Jacob and I are ready to train for a new event to get ourselves outside and moving. And that event will be…the Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon at the end of August!
Yes, this is a bold committment from someone who barely has time to brush her teeth these days. But there’s nothing more important than my health, and training for something has always given me that extra push and motivation to try harder. Sticking to a half marathon training schedule will be hard given the amount of work travel I have these days, but I need a new goal to help me reach my A1c and weight goals. I love challenge of training for something, and it’s been a long time since I’ve done a distance race. I’m ready to try again.
Plus, what’s better than training for a half marathon in wine country where I know there will be a cold glass of chardonnay waiting for me at the end!? My kind of motivation!
