So how long do you expect to take to run the half-marathon? I’ve been thinking about doing some running again after 33 years away from it and the amount of time I run should be as long as I can stand not to have a meal. Or should I plan on eating a meal as I run? If you were running a full marathon would you have to plan for a meal and how do you do that while running?

Tim - all good questions and I think it’s great that you’re thinking about running again! I run 10 minute miles, so a half marathon takes me about 2 hours and 10 minutes. I don’t eat “real food” on the course, and I wouldn’t for a marathon either. I only eat glucose gels/blocks, and the only thing I’m trying to do is 1.) keep my blood sugars as normal as possible 2.) get fuel into my body. You worry less about what you’re eating, and more about where your BG is at and just getting straight energy into your body. Now after the run? THEN it’s all about the meal :)

Thanks for posting this. As someone who has dabbled in jogging and has been faced with the conundrum of how the heck to carry what I need for diabetes while I’m out this is very helpful. I will have to check out those belts, it looks perfect for running. (Choc Mint GU Gels are my fave too!)

Just found your blog!! Very excited, im a t1 & runner too!! This video made me feel good & like I’m doing the right thing packing all my stuff for runs! Do you have specific hydrating techniques you do before your long runs/ races? I’d love to know!!

L

Yay Lindsay, I’m so glad you like the blog! I have to be honest, I don’t have a specific hydration regimen. I tend to stick to water (although if I’m running in the morning, I do have coffee! Strange I know, but it works for me). Yes, I think you’re doing the right thing by bringing your gear with you - that way, you can feel comfortable and focus on the running!
