One for the (lame) record books…

I have to say, the 24 hour period between Sunday night’s dinner and Tuesday morning might have been one of the crappiest 24+ hours of BGs I’ve ever had (please note exhibit A in the DexCom photo). Between Sunday night and very early Tuesday morning, I could not, for the life of me, to the tune of over 50 units of insulin, get my blood sugar below 200mg/dL. That is until all the boluses I took seemed to hit at around 6am Tuesday morning when I plummeted to a sweaty, messy 42mg/dL (yuck).

I’m still not sure what caused this ruckus, although my bets are certainly on my Sunday dinner: a legume-heavy soup cooked to perfection in our crockpot. Something about the beans, their carb count, slow digesting high-fiberness, and my stress levels simply ruined my blood sugar for literally 24 hours after eating that dinner. Now is it completely fair to blame it on the beans? Maybe not. Coulda had a little blockage in my cannula - you know the kind that’s big enough to let your sugars drift up but small enough to let enough insulin through to keep you alive…and just the right size to make you think you’re crazy? Could have been one of those. It could have been my tough morning workout on Monday. Could have been the stress of having a short work week and needing to get a ton done in the next few days. Maybe I developed a day-long insulin resistance problem. The point is, I don’t really know what caused this horrible day’s worth of BGs. I do know that diabetes makes no sense though, and that numbers like that aren’t predicting a good A1c test, which is coming up next week, and adding to my stress. I also know that I’m still tired today from being “above the line” for so long (and from swiftly dropping so low below it too).

Good thing I’m headed on vacation tomorrow - which will also include a pump vacation for yours truly. I’ve always said that one thing I miss about MDI is knowing for sure whether or not I took my insulin. With pumps, there’s always a little doubt and wonder in the back of your mind, the concerns of “is my cannula blocked? Should I pull it? What if I waste a pod?” With shots, you know exactly what you took. I’m looking forward to a few days of from all my hardware - computer, iPhone, pump, and CGM alike!
