The Birthday Aftermath
I had one of the most wonderful birthdays ever on Saturday, and I have to say I feel truly blessed to have such wonderful friends and family in my life. And food. I have truly wonderful food in my life as well. On my birthday, I say carbs? What carbs? And I indulge in my favorites. And yes, I know this post is hot on the heels of my “pump on fire” complaint on Friday, but on your birthday, who cares? Although I may have taken a record-breaking number of units on Saturday, I was so so SO happy to not worry about the numbers on my meter and just enjoy myself. And these foods were worth every bolus.
Indulgences included but were not limited to: One ooyey-gooey gourmet grilled cheese, dipped in a thick tomato bisque (around 60 carbs), one serving of salmon tartare on grilled toast (15 carbs), my FAVORITE food in the world: the baked pasta at my stepmom’s restaurant (orecchiette pasta, Gruyere cheese, pancetta, all baked in the wood-fired oven and covered in parmesan - it’s out-of-this-world good, and at least 70 carbs), and one birthday fresh fruit crisp (pie crust crumbled over fresh fruit, again baked in the wood-fired oven and topped with vanilla ice cream - total carbs: off the Richter).
Dealing with my blood sugars wasn’t pretty (as evidenced by my CGM photo below - finally evening out a little at 170 the NEXT day around 4pm), but you know what? Your birthday only comes once a year. And it’s the one day where I don’t let anything bother me and I do exactly what I want to do - carbs and all.

Hey, Lexie…i could have written your post! My birthday was Thursday and I got taken to both lunch and dinner. I just winged the boluses as I went and came out really alright. I felt the same way you did andI’m very glad to hear our birthdays were equally wonderful! Here’s to another good year.
