FOUND!

I would have missed it if it hadn’t been for the bright sunshine of a San Diego winter’s day. It was late afternoon on Saturday, and I cruised home after a busy day of errands.
And there it was. My missing DexCom, face down in the dirt, still wrapped in it’s protective rubber case. How could I have missed it? It was right there the whole time….under the mailbox?
Pause. REALLY? REALLY?UNDER THE MAILBOX? How the frick-frack-a-lackin did my DexCom end up outside in the shrubbery UNDER THE MAILBOX?
Well it’s no wonder I didn’t find it when I tore up the house, the car, and called every store I’d walked in to last Monday. That is really and truly the LAST place I would have ever thought to look. And I had missed it the entire week because I got home after it was dark, so I couldn’t see it when I was grabbing the mail for the past five days. Also, it had the protective rubber case on and fell in to the dirt, so I couldn’t hear it when it dropped. I tried to figure out the logistics of how it stayed in my pocket when I got out of the car, walked to the mailbox, and then fell just as I reached for the mail, but I still have no idea how the heck that happened.
As soon as I picked it up, I shook off some of the dirt and clicked the “OK” button. The screen lit up, and displayed the tiny icon in the corner, proving it had already found the signal on my sensor and was fully-functioning. I was so happy that I looked around the empty street, hoping there was someone I could share the good news with - probably best that there wasn’t anyone around though, I don’t think my neighbors would understand me if I jovially cried out “My DEXCOM!! HE CAME HOME!! I’M GONNA KNOW MY BLOOD SUGAR ALL THE TIME AGAIN!”
I am so excited to have my little Dex back home, and in the process of this fiasco, I also learned a great thing about the DexCom company. If you are an existing user, and you lose or damage your receiver, they will actually replace it one time for you for only $300 - as opposed to the $700 a new set normally costs. I really appreciate that about the company, and it made me feel better to know that after learning that their batteries are only guaranteed for one year. Even better, you can actually send the replacement set back for a full refund if, like me, your old Dex turns up a week or two later. Pretty sweet deal! (And that policy also tells me that this kind of thing must happen a fair amount!)
I am so happy to have my CGM back, I’ve really gotten used to managing my diabetes with this little device, and I truly felt lost without him. Now about that promise I made to never have another bagel again if he came home….can we negotiate on that one? Please?

YAY! That’s so great!!!
By the way, your first post about losing your Dexcom inspired me to put a label on the back that says, “Medical device. If found, please call” and my number. No one would have called in your case, as it hadn’t been bound by anyone, but I figure it couldn’t hurt.
And I figure the “medical device” part might make someone less likely to assume they’ve picked up a funky mp3 player they can sell to some chump…
