Sometimes, when you’ve had diabetes for a long time, you start to think “I got this” for the “easy” stuff. I’m talking about when you think to yourself I’m just walking the dog around the block…there’s no way I’ll get low…And then you totally do get low and thank god you’re only a block away from home because you didn’t even bring a GU pack. Or when you make that one dish that’s always a three-unit bolus. Except that tonight it’s not because you have a cold/worked out way to hard that morning/bolused a few hours ago so you have IOB already and now you totally effed up that “easy” meal.
I took a kickboxing class this morning. It was so great to be back in my element, doing my favorite type of workout. But it has been a few months since I was in a martial arts class, and I found myself needing to take things slow and really work on my fundamentals. The “easy” stuff like my stance and keeping my hands up in a guard position. These are the basics of martial arts, things that should be on autopilot for someone like me who has been doing this for nine years. And yet, those things were a little rusty since I’d last hit the gym. As the coach kept reminding me to move my hands up or angle my feet a certain way, I realized I needed to slow down and get back to basics.
The same is true for diabetes management. In fact, diabetes is so sneaky that I think the moment you say “I got this,” an internal Jinx Alert goes off and diabetes chooses that moment to kick your ass. Just because I’m only going for a light walk isn’t a reason to not take a GU along. And even though I might be bolusing for a common meal doesn’t mean that particular day has had the same insulin requirements. It’s always good to practice your basics with diabetes, even if it feels a little redundant.
Because just like with kickboxing, if the basics are off, you’re gonna get knocked out at some point!
