I just refreshed my stash of low BG fix-its for the car yesterday. I like to get treats that taste good, but not so good that I want to eat them all the time. I also like candy that contains very specific carbohydrate counts so I can dole out as close to 15 grams as possible and avoid over-treating.
For me, things in the gummi candy department do the trick. I don’t mind the fruity/licorice flavors, but I also don’t crave them (that award goes to dark chocolate anything, which you will never find in my house…because I ate it all).
The challenge with lows is that all of us want to eat until we feel better. We’ve all had the middle-of-the-night-panic-inducing-low which drove us to eat the entire contents of the fridge and then search the cupboards. That night ends with a nice rebound high of 350mg/dL and a headache the next morning. It can be so hard to keep it in check when you’re feeling low and scared though.
The directive for treating lows has been the rule of 15 for years: eat 15 grams of carbs and wait 15 minutes and test again. Some lows I’m capable of doing this, other times there’s literally nothing that will stop me from inhaling 10 packs of GU. The brain does funny things when deprived of glucose…including overriding all things rational.
So to help with that, I trust in things like these fairly tasty sour peach rings…and whatever those weird licorice raspberry things are that I bought on sale….
